Craps may seem like an extremely complex game to first-time players, but in reality, it’s fairly simple once you understand the basics. Not all bets are created equal, however, and so we’ve put together this handy overview of craps strategy for experienced players who are looking to improve their odds of winning big at the casino.
This guide from 22Bet includes information on the best odds bets you can make as well as strategies to help you keep the house edge down while maximizing your total bankroll over time.
1) The Give
A give bet is a one-roll bet on any of one of these: 2, 3, or 12. (The fourth possibility, sevens, has an extremely low house edge but is rarely offered in casinos.) You win if your number comes up on that roll; you lose if it doesn’t. There are several ways to place give bets: some are made while placing your main bet; others must be made in addition to your main bet.
2) The Take
The core of any good craps game is pretty simple. All you need to know are a few best bets, which means making sure you take full advantage of propositions that have good odds and return more than they cost. Best bets are particularly valuable in multi-roll propositions like pass/don’t pass, come/don’t come, and don’t pass/pass.
These propositions allow a player to make multiple wagers on each roll; these include both single rolls (1 or 2) and multi-rolls (3 through 12). You don’t necessarily want to put your money on every number; instead, there are some numbers you’ll want to avoid and other numbers that might be worth taking a chance on.
3) The Field (or Come)
When craps are rolled, bet that it will show a two, three, or 12. This will be your come wager, and you’ll win if any of these numbers are thrown before a seven.
The payout here is even money (1:1). If one of these numbers hits, it doesn’t matter what else happens on that roll. A winning come bet pays out immediately. You can also make an odds bet on rolling a 7 or 11 (called a yo) or betting on rolling an 8 or 9 (called an odds bet). However, only place your chips behind either of these bets after you’ve already made your come wager.
4) Hardways
Hardways is a wager that’s made if you throw either 2, 3, or 12 on your first roll. The best pay out at even money and can be placed from inside or outside of the casinos.
Conclusion
In craps, the house edge can be as high as 5.3%. This means that you have to wager $100 thirty-three times to win $100. That’s not particularly favorable, especially when you compare it to something like blackjack where you get about a 0.5% edge, or slots where your house edge hovers around 2%.
